Hair Transplantation
What can we do to permanently replace hair for you?
The only permanent hair loss treatment is hair transplantation. Over the years the great advances have meant that the "dolls hair" look is no more (pictured).
We create close to a perfectly natural appearance as it is your own hair and it grows amongst your existing hair breaking through the skin. Done well, your transplant is not visible to the naked eye. There is no scarring at all where the hairs are placed. The follicles and surrounding tissue is removed from the back of the head using either strip grafting or follicular unit extraction. After a healing period of around six weeks, as with any surgery, any scarring in this area has faded and, in the future, will mostly be nearly invisible, especially using the modern tricophidic closure method. The hairs grow through naturally, over a period of 12 months, and do not leave any "lumping" or "pit" marks at the site of the implantations. We offer help to women and men to thicken the present hair for a variety of reasons apart from hair loss, scars can be disguised following cosmetic surgery procedures, and hairlines can be lowered. We can transform genital hair lines before or after transgender surgery, or as requested and we can help with hair loss following burns or disfiguring accidents and Medicare rebates are available for this work.
Where is the procedure carried out and by whom? There are only a handful of doctors in Australia that have completed the basic and advanced hair transplantation course with the International Society of Hair Transplant Surgeons. The Surgeon is assisted by skilled assistants who cut and help place the hair in the very small slits (they are the width of a razor blade that the surgeon has meticulously made. The procedure is done under clincal settings and we comply with the Australian Standards of Sterilization. The procedure is carried out under a mild intravenous sedation and local anaesthetic mix to ensure your safety and comfort. The first thing that happens on the day will be another consultation to go over the plan for your hair with the surgeon. This is done to ensure that there are no misunderstandings. A strip of hair is excised from the back of the head in an area where it will not be visible in the future, and it mostly cannot be detected when you leave after the procedure. The wound is closed in several layers without tension and using the tricophitic edge technique to aim to give, as far as possible, invisible scars. The strip is then carefully dissected, first into slivers then into naturally occuring 1, 2 or 3 hair follicles. Whilst the dissection is occuring, the surgeon will place the donor sites according to the plan and taking consideration of the natural growth patterns of your hair. Then the team gets to work and over several hours they will carefully place the follicles in the sites, it is meticulous and precise work.
The grafts will start to re-grow in approximately 90 days. Hair growth depends on the actual cycle of each individual bulb, and the majority will grow within a period of 7 months. This hair will not go through the balding cycle and will remain for the rest of your life.
The lenght of the procedure will depend on the amount of hair transplanted. You will be given careful instruction on how to care for your new hair and will be followed up for removal of sutures as adviced. The small incision marks will begin to disappear within 6 to 10 days and there is no need for bandages. Your new hair will need no maintenance (other than cutting) and will keep re-growing for the rest of your new life.
